Though the Civil War is raging, fourteen-year-old Betsy Westmore and her family feel safe on their Pennsylvania farm. But they soon realize the world is not as safe and peaceful as imagined. Distant gunshots escalate and artillery shells shriek through the air as the Battle of Gettysburg unfolds nearby. With an older brother serving in the Union army, Betsy felt she had already experienced enough of the war. Soon, Betsy's home is commandeered as a field hospital where she and her family must assist the wounded and dying. Betsy's faith is tested by the new circumstances. Can she trust God in the midst of this terrifying tragedy? Following the battle, Betsy witnesses the aftermath of war and is left with questions she cannot answer. She wonders if the important men coming to the dedication of Gettysburg National Cemetery will offer a satisfactory purpose for the events she has witnessed.
