Darling My Own, Volume I explores the personal and military life of Bob DeLap, the direct effects of the war on the couple and some of their friends, and the developing relationship between Bob and Lucille. It is also a documentation of Company C of the 1267th Engineers (Combat) Battalion about which little has been written. The unit served as an occupational unit as the war was ending in France, Germany and Luzon, Philippines. This volume covers the seven months of training at camps Robinson in Arkansas and Camp Maxey, near Paris, Texas, and Bob's departure to Europe. It also looks backward to Bob's background in Sioux City, Iowa, and his previous training in the Army Air Force and ASTP at Northern State Teacher's College (now Northern State University), Aberdeen, South Dakota, where he met Lucille.
