Description

Our public school system is a mess, but there are answers. It can, and it must, be fixed. This is one way to approach improving our schools. The problems we face are myriad. No one answer can solve them. However, approaching the achievement gap, which is a chronic issue facing our most at risk students, our minority students, our economically disadvantaged students, and the ever rising number of ELL students, can help to raise up the experience for all students. Anyone with experience in public schools will understand that discipline, low achievement in reading and math, and lack of family support and engagement, are all factors that contribute to our public school systems' decline. When students experience hopelessness and failure, they act out. They feel that the system doesn't care about them. When they act out, or create discipline problems, that affects everyone in the school. Parents must be involved. The schools have to recognize the issues facing their student stakeholders which go far beyond test scores. Finally, teachers have to be both paid commensurate to their education and time, and schools need to establish universal expectations for parent-student attitudes toward school. While this book doesn't come close to solving all the problems facing our public school system, it does provide some understanding of some of the key issues that impact student achievement.
