Description

This project traces the history of Documenta, a periodic exhibition of contemporary art produced every five years in Kassel, Germany since 1955. Growing out of the reconstruction of a bombed-out city, this international exhibition of contemporary art has encompassed in its fifty-year history the modernism of the postwar era, the radical art of the 1960s and 1970s, the pluralism of the 1980s, and the global and interdisciplinary trends of the past two decades. This dissertation examines the ways that the specific concerns of eleven different editions of Documenta interrelate with the structures of the periodic exhibition format and the concept of history it embodies.
