The motivation of this dissertation is to investigate the cohesive crack model with the goal of devising feasible and practical fracture test methodologies for quasi-brittle materials, including ice, concrete and rock. A cohesive Griffith crack under uniform far field load is studied first. Four cohesive models are examined. Two essentially different test conditions are presented in detail: fixed-grip displacement control (thereby implying fully developed process zones) and load control (whereby the process zone development is truncated at the peak load). Then the focus shifts to a cohesive edge crack under uniform far field loading. New integrals are invented to obtain the solution. The influence of both load control and fixed-grip control on the nucleation and growth of a cohesive edge crack in a semi-infinite plane is examined for the first time. The latter two studies are then quickly applied to the study of a cohesive Griffith crack or edge crack under central concentrated loading, which both belong to the so called "negative geometry". The difference between positive and negative geometries are studied in detail and explained by the cohesive crack model. Finally, the cohesive crack model is applied to the fracture of first-year sea ice in Antarctica using data obtained during the 2004 field trip. The stress separation curves are constructed. In particular, the influence of loading rate on the ice fracture behavior is measured and studied.
