Description

Today's video game design philosophies focus on both fun and immersion. When making a game, designers focus their efforts on encouraging specific behaviors within players as they explore a game. One technique used involves exploiting the relationship between a game's audio design and its visual design, including everything from a game's art to its color pallet, sound effects, and music. This paper examines how audiovisual design of games influences the behavior of players during play. To investigate this, I asked 20 participants to play the game Rez HD, a high definition remake of the 2001 rhythm shooter of the same name. Participants played the game once with sound and once without sound. I then reviewed the participants' behavioral metrics through interviews and recordings of gameplay footage. Results of the user study show that 60% of players self-reported incorporation of sound during play, and in-game statistics showed slight improvements in skill when playing with sound. In addition, 70% of participants also reported enjoying the game more with sound, which also contributed to changes in in-game behavior. While interviews reflect the importance of creating emotional connections with players to encourage specific behaviors, actual improvements in skill are minimal and primarily driven by a learning effect.
