Many valuable studies and monographs have been written on various phases or sections of the subject, but of Austria-Hungary as a whole, of the political, racial, and social evolution of the countries over which the Habsburg Emperor-King holds sway, there exists at present no account to which the reader can turn. The paramount importance of the Austro-Hungarian question in European politics, and the crisis which seems to be impending in the affairs of the Dual Monarchy, are enough in themselves to attract attention, but apart from them this Whirlpool of Europe is a region full of interest, packed with historical associations of the most entrancing character and at the same time pulsing with modern life and the problems of social and political development.
