The effort has been to point out the broad, beaten, every-day path, carefully avoiding digressions into the bye-ways and eccentricities of language. For my object was not to make a complete Grammar, or a History of Language, which is useless for learners, but to teach Grammar up to a certain point, steadily keeping in mind the class of persons for whom the work is intended. If any one will take the trouble to follow in order the course marked out for him, he will certainly know in time the main principles and practice of Grammar; the matter being reduced to a mere question of time, and not of intelligence.
