Excerpt from Memorial Services of Commemoration Day: Held in Canton, May 30, 1877, Under the Auspices of Revere Encampment, Post 94, Grand Army of the Republic Mr. Commander, - Fellow Citizens: We meet to-day to fulfil a twofold duty. We pause in the conflict of life to devote this day to the memory of our dead soldiers, and to place upon their graves our annual offering of fragrant flowers. They sacrificed their lives for the salvation of the Republic, and throwing aside all petty distinctions of party, with one accord, as citizens of Canton, we assemble to render homage to valor and to worth. Their work is finished, and they sleep in peace. "The muffled drum's sad roll has beat The soldier's last tattoo; No more on life's parade shall meet That brave and fallen few; On Fame's eternal camping ground Their silent tents are spread, And glory guards, with solemn round, The bivouac of the dead. Rest on, embalmed and sainted dead! Dear as the blood ye gave. No impious footstep here shall tread The herbage of your grave.
