Elle etait la, a proximite de son theatre, l'Odeon, pas loin du jardin du Luxembourg, dont la pepiniere etait pour elle promenade de predilection, et dans le voisinage de vieilles amities. Sainte-Beuve, son ami et son contemporain, - il etait ne comme elle en 1804 - habitait non loin rue du Montparnasse. Je me dirigeai donc, un beau matin, vers la rue des Feuillantines, apres avoir, comme l'on dit, pris mon courage a deux mains. J'etais fort intimide, moi, tout jeune homme, a l'idee de me trouver en presence de celle qui avait ecrit Mauprat, un roman que je n'avais cesse de lire et de relire. J'avais a remettre a George Sand une lettre d'un de ses plus intimes amis, et une reponse a lui demander.
