In 2004 U.S. residents age 12 or older experienced an estimated 24 million violent & property victimizations, according to the Nat. Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS). These criminal victimizations included an estimated 18.6 million property crimes (burglary, motor vehicle theft, & theft), 5.1 million violent crimes (rape, sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault, & simple assault), & 224,000 personal thefts (pocket picking & purse snatching).
