Description

This account evokes an exciting period in the sixties and revisits the famous and popular Adelphi Hotel Liverpool. It recalls an interlude of youth and follows the lives of young women with living-in positions in the iconic Adelphi. The prologue sets the scene, and each subsequent chapter observes different aspects of everyday life in the hotel: uneventful yet atmospheric, confessional, interesting with historical resonance. At times it is funny and philosophical about human relationships with more going on than meets the eye and more than one can fathom. These vignettes of hotel life happened in a time fairly recent but which appears a lifetime away. It is a story of romantic love, frustrated ambition, domestic life, set in a time when the world seemed in a state of flux and the sixties offered a new world vision. It is written with a light-hearted touch, and its main purpose is to entertain, amuse, and convey the spirit of the time, portraying the opulent comfort and lifestyle of the hotel along with the social niceties and restraints. Remembering, too, the kindly, gentle, and uncomplaining staff who have made a long and lasting impression. It should appeal to a cross section of people but especially to women everywhere who are able to recall their halcyon days of youth.
