At 88, World War 2 veteran Joe Stackhouse is in the early stages of undiagnosed Alzheimer's. With memories of the past more clear than those of the day before, he starts to relive his youth, when a strong sense of purpose and the dangers of war made life vibrant.As Joe's progression into the darkness intensifies, taking him from independence to assisted living and finally into a nursing home, his grandson bears the brunt of the transition. Only partially understanding the disease, he nonetheless knows that death is the final outcome. He struggles with overwhelming loss, not having realized until almost the end that everything he knows about being a man he learned from his grandfather - and that his grandfather is so much more than he has always seemed.
