Description

There are many stories in the naked city and this is one that very few know about or think about, but must be told even though only those with 'mixed blood' and light colored skin will even care -- a story of a race of people that have no race even though they think they do; a story that begins in the 1700's and ends in 2005, on a day that was far more important than that of a politician or movie star. It is a true story about those people who were free persons of color in the hills of Virginia, before it became West Virginia, and intermarried with Indians who refused to be extradited to the West as part of the Trail of Tears. It is about that segment of society who were resented by black slaves / former slaves and rejected by whites; those who chose to find their own place called Chestnut Ridge, high above Phillipi, West Virginia, to get away from everyone. Because of coal mining and land being sold by Quakers in Ohio, many moved to an area known as Chesterhill and its surrounding suburbs. When towns and factories begin to boom in the 20th century, many, including some of the author's relatives, move to Northern towns to pass for white to get good jobs.
