Merriam Press Military Monograph 134. First Edition (April 2012). In January of 1944 the United States was preparing for its invasion of France. The author's father, an aviation student in the United States Army Air Corps, was in his final months of training at North Carolina State College in Raleigh, North Carolina. Her mother, his fiancée, impatiently awaited his return, from her home in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Since mid-July of 1943 they had neither seen nor spoken to one another. Their only contact was their written letters and infrequent telegrams. Their story continues in Volume II. This is the second of three planned volumes of the beautiful and amazing love letters written by an Irish woman and an American soldier from Lockport, New York, during World War II. Their story continues with very detailed coverage of how the war affected them and the people around them during 1944.
