Claire Halward went missing when she was five, last seen running up Hampstead Heath. Seven years later she is returned to virtually the same spot with no memory of her abduction. The family reunion should be a happy one but her mother, Karin, struggles to bond with an unemotional Claire. Her father, Nick, remains equally distant. Despite conclusive DNA tests, he doubts she is Claire and then doubts himself. An anxious and impatient Karin enlists her psychologist friend and ex-lover, Sitch, to help retrieve Claire's memories but he is reluctant: Claire's case is beyond his expertise. To his surprise, she retrieves her abduction memory easily, but it's from a different location in London. Claire no longer knows who she is. She dreams of an identical twin that doesn't exist and her body is covered with strange scars. She becomes aware that she is being watched by a man with silver-blue eyes, the same man she saw in her abduction memory: the man in the hatch of a spaceship. John Fox works the nightshift as a hospital porter and can't sleep. When he does, he has nightmares about walking down endless corridors and suffers from paranoic episodes and drug flashbacks. He believes he was abducted as a child and retained by unseen aliens as a drone, working an operation using genetically identical non-birth twins to generate a pre-annihilation force that opens what might be a layer of space...or heaven itself. When Claire runs away to find him, it's to uncover a truth she can't believe: about herself, about Nick, about the abductions...and about Ultra.
