The Pioneers (Book 4 of 5 of the Leatherstocking Tales, the sequel to The Last of the Mohicans and The Pathfinder) New York state's frontier is advancing rapidly as the novel begins, and there's an argument between Judge Marmaduke and Elizabeth Temple over the death of a buck. Leatherstocking Natty Bumpo and his closest friend, Mohican Indian Chingachgook, compete with the Temples for the loyalties of a young visitor, a hunter called Oliver Edwards.
