When I suffered a stroke in 2004 I had the love and the support of my wife Marguerite and my business partners to help me to cope with the stroke's effects. I retired in 2006, and I whether it was that retiring was a bit of a shock to my system while all the other people in my life were very busy with their lives and did not have a lot of time to spend with me, or that I just longed for something constructive to do, I started feeling as though I was becoming invisible. I started to do woodworking, but my heart yearned to spend more time with Marguerite. She had been running her accounting practice since 1988 and she worked long hours. When she told me that she wished there was something that we could do to help people who are dealing with illness, I was overjoyed because I saw in that the opportunity for us to work together on that project. I wish that I could find the words to adequately explain how hard it was to look back on my stroke and to try to write you a book to give you structured advice on how to deal with a life-changing event. Marguerite and I spent months discussing, making notes and creating the structure for INDIVIDUALITY ROCKS !! I was in heaven because that is the way I treated all the businesses that I created all through my life - by clearly envisioning the end result! INDIVIDUALITY ROCKS !! ended up being the introductory book on our philosophy that individuals are all superstars in their own right. I am lighthearted and fun loving by nature, and so is Marguerite, so I suggested to her that we build on INDIVIDUALITY ROCKS !! in a more lighthearted way by using my more tongue-in-cheek THE WORLD ACCORDING TO TOBY: WHERE DID I GO RIGHT? idea.
