R. 6295; July 27, 1980, Hanover, N. H Yet the family farm has been literally losing ground to competing uses and development. I need not go through at this time all the fac tors and forces responsible for this decline. They are well documented elsewhere and similar to trends around the country as a whole. If current trends continue, however, the Vermont family farm and the quality of rural community life in the State will disappear. In order to reverse the trend we need local, State, and Federal poli cies stressing the importance of retaining farmland and building upon the strengths of the family farm as opposed to agribusiness.
