When fourteen years old Mike Spanner's parents drag him off for a rain-soaked caravan holiday on the island of Anglesey, things look pretty bleak...until he meets caravan neighbour Jill, the feisty but frustratingly unpredictable girl of his dreams. Unfortunately for lovesick Mike, Jill also features prominently in the dreams of handsome and athletic local farmer's son, Dafydd. To complicate matters even further, Mike and Dafydd discover to their dismay that, despite the continual point scoring in a spiralling competition to impress the subject of their affections, they actually rather like each other. With a showdown at the Sunshine Cove campsite's Lobster Club Disco looming, events take an unexpected turn when they discover a gang of ruthless drug smugglers is using the site as cover for their operation, forcing the love-struck teens to present a united front in a danger-fraught attempt to thwart the villains dastardly plan and bring them to justice. In a literally explosive finale involving armed police and customs officers, a kidnapping and sea chase, Mike and his new friends prove to the bad guys, law enforcement agencies (whose own plans for a 'collar' they have inadvertently thwarted), their horrified parents and themselves that they have what it takes to throw a 'spanner in the works'.
