Julia Harris a happily married attorney whose world comes crashing down around her when a seventeen-year-old black man is arrested and accused of murdering a white police officer and wounding another one in the crime ridden city of New Orleans. When she meets with her client, Matthew Robertson, she is shocked to learn that their paths have crossed seventeen years before. In order to save her client's life, Julia calls upon her former lover, Franklin Miles, a brilliant attorney to co-counsel her in the case. As Julia reconciles with her past, she also has to confront the guilt she felt from walking away from the one person that needed her the most.
