In response to numerous requests for a guide to the examinations that constitute the core of clinical microbiology, the editors of the Clinical Microbiology Procedures Handbook have developed Essential Procedures for Clinical Microbiology. This text provides a concise approach to the performance of laboratory analyses aimed at identifying whenever possible the etiological agents of infectious diseases with presently available modalities. The methods included in this guide are not exhaustive; rather, they represent the choices of a group of experts in the various divisions that make up the discipline of clinical microbiology. The format of this volume will enable the reader to follow a specimen through all of the steps from its proper collection to a final report issued to the clinician.
