Referred to by Frank Lloyd Wright as The Master, Sullivan was the leading figure in a group of Chicago architects who changed the face of the urban skyline when, in 1891, the tallest commercial building in the world was sixteen stories. The incredibly complex ornamentation for which he was known was based on botanical abstractions. Over one hundred illustrations help to explain his influence on the innovation known as the skyscraper.
