Explains and demonstrates a model for social workers to communicate with persons of color by casting them in the role of experts on their own lives. Emphasis is placed on the beginning stage of the helping process, the information-gathering stage. What happens next is not addressed directly, although there is a lengthy appendix on culturally relevant treatment and interventions. Early chapters address information for achieving the role of a culturally competent social worker. Subsequent chapters outline steps of the interview model based on the ethnographic interviewing work of James Spradley. Includes chapter exercises and illustrations from interviews drawn from the author's practice and published cases. Appendices offer principles and codes of ethics.
