During a period of roughly fifty years (1825-1875) an artistic movement developed in America that was based in Romanticism and inspired by the wild areas in the vicinity of New York's Hudson River. This first native school of American landscape painting included among its leading artists Thomas Cole, Asher Brown Durand, and Thomas Doughty as well as, later, looking westwood, Frederic Church, Thomas Moran, and Albert Bierstadt. The story of this movement and the masters who created sweeping scenes of the New World in all its pristine grandeur is detailed here, accompanied by a portfolio of 70 full-color reproductions.
