Lyme disease is caused by Borellia burgdorferi, a bacterium carried by ticks. When a contaminated tick bites a person, infection may result. Early symptoms include fatigue, sore throat, swollen lymph glands, neck and back pain, and a red rash. If the infection spreads throughout the body, it may cause more serious conditions, such as meningitis, Bell's palsy, or nervous-system problems. Most cases of Lyme disease can be treated with antibiotics, and the disease can be prevented by avoiding ticks. Lyme Disease, Second Edition covers the latest research into this disease, its treatment, and its effects on the human body. Deadly diseases affect everyone. Although not all cases are fatal, each disease causes a degree of harm and discomfort to those whom it afflicts and sometimes can have long-lasting consequences. Each book in the series Deadly Disease and Epidemics takes the reader through all aspects of a disease'from its history and causes or method of infection to its treatment and prevention. The books provide a foundation for understanding the basics of microbiology, immunology, and epidemiology. Book jacket.
