Twenty-six year old Adam Runner is an English teacher and head varsity boys' basketball coach at a small high school. Popular and successful as a coach and teacher, his emotional life away from school is in shambles. Distraught over the deaths of his girlfriend and then his entire family in separate automobile accidents less than a year apart, he blames himself for certain circumstances he believes could have prevented the tragedies. But everything changes when he meets Glory, a senior cheerleader for a school that will be playing against his Dickson High Devil Dog team. And so begins an inexplicable attraction that captivates them both and causes Runner to reconsider his vow not to allow for new relationships. A winter storm, an escaped prisoner from a nearby Federal Penitentiary, and the accidental shooting of Runner's best friend, Chief of Police Ben Stoddard, by a crazed FBI agent, along with his growing infatuation for a girl he knows nothing about, divides Runner's attention away from a basketball game that has been dubbed by the media as 'The Game of the Decade, ' involving two undefeated and number-one ranked teams from different states.
