2012年4月6日，國際著名天體物理和宇宙學家、教育家、中國民主和人權倡導者方勵之先生在美國亞利桑那州（Arizona）圖森市（Tucson）去世，引起全世界各地，包括海峽兩岸三地的科學家和各界人士的沈痛哀悼。2012年4月14日在圖森舉行了隆重葬禮；同年10月初方勵之先生生前所任教的亞利桑那大學又舉辦了紀念方勵之科學學術會議。在這兩個活動上，方勵之先生的眾多同事、學生和親友們作了感人的發言或書面演講。在這些文章以及原有的一些關於他科學工作介紹的文章的基礎上，本書編輯委員會又向方勵之生前的科學方面的老師、海內外同事、學生、朋友和家人徵稿，請他們從方勵之先生對科學、教育、和人權的貢獻角度來回憶他們與他的交往，並匯集文稿編成此書。希望這本書能夠幫助讀者了解方勵之先生作為一個科學家的本色，以及他是如何從科學出發來影響中國的科技教育發展和社會政治改革，並為後人研究方勵之、研究中國和世界近現代史、近現代科技史保留一些珍貴的史料。
