With the development of the Chinese opera, the proverb of traditional opera, a kind of crystallization of wisdom, emerged from the practice of art and has been booming ever since. Throughout the history of the opera, the Chinese artists have accumulated a "maxim" of performing arts for thousands of years, which is regarded as the "ancestor words" of the art of opera, but there is still no monograph to study the proverbs and ballads of the opera. In the Qing Dynasty, Du Wenlan compiled a special book with 100 volumes in length on ancient folk songs and proverbs, Gu Yao Yan, in which no opera proverb is included. Mr. Liu Keding, a contemporary writer and a historian of the Chinese opera, wrote The Proverb of Opera: The Ancestral Words in Chinese Opera Arts based on his research in many years. The completion of the manuscript attracted historians’ attention. Professor Jiang Xingyu regards that “in The Ancestral Words in Chinese Opera Arts, Mr. Liu Keding deals with the development of the opera and the relationship between opera and life, which is so unique and insightful to read. It can be seen that he is an expert in the cultural and academic fields, and has studied the opera works in Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. Therefore, his research on the proverbs is often related to other aspects such as history, literature, music, dance, calligraphy etc., and his interpretation is interdisciplinary. The readers surely will feel a little bit more like walking along a winding path to a secluded quiet place!” The comprehensive artistic treasure of Chinese opera gave birth to its unique artistic charm of ancestral words. This book is to fill the gap of the study of the development of Chinese operas and is a window to let the reader see the profound origin of Chinese opera with its special literature, history, color, language, music, martial arts…
