Despite years of growth that dramatically altered Staten Island's landscapes, the Island retains its unique identity as a borough apart. The least populated of New York City's boroughs, the Island continues to be recognized for independence of spirit and preservation of community and historic treasures. Located within a short ferry ride to Manhattan, the Island has elements, such as the Travis Fourth of July Parade and the Richmond County Fair, that are more typical of Middle America than a metropolitan suburb. As in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, Islanders can be counted on to pull together, and as they plan for the future, one thing is certain "the best is yet to be.".
