Pulmonary medicine also known as pulmonology is the specialty of medicine that deals with the diseases of respiratory tract. Pulmonary medicine is a branch of internal medicine and is concerned with a patient that needs life support and mechanical ventilation. Pulmonary medicine helps in the treatment of various diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, pneumonia, tuberculosis and chest infections. It treats the disease using various medication methods that includes inhalation using bronchodilators and steroids or in the oral form by using antibiotics and leukotriene antagonists. When the respiratory disease is severe, oxygen therapy is often given. When this is inadequate, the patient is treated with mechanical ventilation.
