Shyamala never imagined nor did she have a crystal ball or a soothsayer to predict that she would be embroiled in a ten-year long battle for gender equality, culminating in a precedent-setting victory in a first-of its-kind class-action lawsuit filed in a federal district court in Minnesota against a major midwestern university for gender discrimination. Her victory sent shock waves throughout the academic world and continues to have a major positive impact in changing their policies and procedures in faculty employment, promotions, tenure, salaries and other benefits. Realizing that no university would now touch her with a twenty foot pole, she changed her career path and has become a lawyer with her own office in the San Francisco Bay Area.
