美聯社從北京發出的報導說：習近平招引公眾對他個人的注意達到不同尋常的程度，並危險地接近全面的個人崇拜，這種現象是後毛澤東時代以來所沒有的。由於擔心毛那種個人崇拜式的領導再度引發政治動盪，毛的繼任者通常傾向於通過共識進行統治的平淡做法。

觀察家們注意到，在今天的中國，對習近平的個人崇拜隨處可見。中國官媒大力宣傳習近平在政治、經濟、外交、軍事、文學等方面的造詣；每天晚間30分鐘的CCTV新聞聯播節目，有關習近平的消息有時能佔20來分鐘；全國各地的書店最顯眼的位置擺放的是習近平的文章和講話集，以及官方組織出版的學習、研究、領會習近平文章講話精神的書籍；官方媒體聽任中國人喊習近平為“大大”；在CCTV官辦的2015年農曆新年的春節晚會上，演員們以習近平的大投影圖像為背景邊歌邊舞，高唱“把心交給你”。

習近平已經很明白地表示，誰要是不堅決支持他，就等於是跟他作對；鑒於貪污腐敗在中國的政治制度中如此普遍氾濫，任何人都可以被指控貪污腐敗。任何一個官員假如跟習近平意見不合，就要擔心下一步就會被清洗。他們何必不假裝認為習近平很了不起呢？
