Azalea is attracted to artists - painters, musicians and writers who seem to have access to worlds that perpetually elude her. She longs for someone who can see beyond the facade of her indifference and unlock her own passions and desires. She finds that in Mr. Brooks, but as their relationship intensifies, she must contend with the risks and implications of their involvement. Written from the perspective of an introverted teenage girl, Waiting for the World to be Made is a coming-of-age story that explores the emotional and moral complexities of a relationship that crosses boundaries.
