From the author's preface: Why doesn't US12 have its own tune? Route 66 has a jazz song. Highway 61, the Blues Highway, gets revisited in Dylan's folk-rock. Why not the old northern blacktop? C'mon, somebody write a song. It could have verses about Detroit at its east end; Aberdeen, both of them; Minneapolis with a polka rhythm or-is it too far north for a bluesy verse-about its intersection with 61? How about a verse for sections called the Lewis and Clark Highway; Lewiston and Clarkston have a bridge, so does Mobridge, so they don't need lyrics. Ah-well. I don't write songs, I tell stories. These I offer from a life along Route 12. Among the stories are events that really happened that way, except none truly happened entirely 'that way.' Whatever you bring to the reading, whatever you find among the pages and paragraphs, my hope is that you enjoy enough to keep reading and that some stories trigger your stories in good memories.
