This Handbook summarizes the state of thinking and presents new evidence on various links between international migration and economic development, with particular reference to the lower-income countries. the links between trade, aid and migration are critically examined, reviewing European states' co-development strategies to limit immigration and their attempts to redirect remittances to the developing countries; doubts are raised about the foundations on which such policies are based. the positive outcomes of a seasonal worker program in New Zealand, the shifting attitudes to migrants arriving in South Africa and the impacts on earnings of those left at home are analyzed. the roles of the diaspora in transferring technology and stimulating trade are addressed, plus that of return migrants in promoting development at home. Finally, recent expansion of internal displacement to escape violence, the experiences of refugees returned from conflict and natural disasters, and the economic roots of international terrorism are examined.
