A historical fiction novella set aboard a 19th century Mississippi steamboat. In The Sugar Queen, a young mother Mary seeks to escape her secluded life after the traumatic death of her husband. She journeys up the Mississippi River on a steamboat with her daughter Flora. When she meets Bill, the black deckhand, their trip takes a new turn as tensions mount among other passengers. The Sugar Queen takes an unsteady course upriver, piloted by an experienced captain Bruce, encountering ghosts of the recent past and dangerous turns. More isolated than before, Mary, Bill and her daughter must navigate their own past to discover what the future has in store for them and the once-divided country they call home.
