In 2005 only 37% of 18 – 24 year olds used their vote. Indeed in many constituencies the turnout overall at the last General Election was below 60%. People have become disillusioned with politics and in particular with our MPs following the expenses scandal. In October 2009 a group of 25 sixth form students formed a Young Enterprise Company. They wrote to every MP and posed the following questions: 1. What is a typical day for an MP? 2. Is there anything in particular that you have done for your constituents that you are most proud of? 3. Why should young people vote in the next General Election and subsequent elections? Over 40 MPs responded and this book gives you an incredible insight into the daily work of an MP. You can read about what they have done for their constituents, from the smallest local issue to bigger, national concerns. These are the people we are being asked to vote for. Wouldn’t it be useful to actually see what they do? The MPs also explain why using your vote is so important and here they give persuasive and convincing arguments that will encourage you to use your democratic right. In addition, the electoral commission explains the voting process and the CitizensUK movement explains why your vote is so important. There is an introduction to parliament as well as interesting facts and a summary of Party positions. If you are in any doubt at all about why to vote, or if you have any interest in politics or indeed in becoming involved in politics, then this book is essential reading.
