It shows how the literature of the spiritual traditions, especially Buddhism, can be of enormous help in understanding the concept of well-being and in developing practices that enhance it. It shows how spiritual ideas are echoed in the theories and techniques of contemporary psychology and psychotherapy. It explores the nature of the new therapies and new religious movements which attempt to combine ancient and modern wisdoms about well-being. It also discusses some of the important issues and questions concerning the use of the spiritual traditions in working with distressed people in a variety of settings.
