Discussed is the diplomatic and economic relationships other countries have with Africa as they are enjoying a more strategic role in international affairs. The benefits of increased diplomatic and trade relations are possible, but many countries must alter their public and policy perceptions to accomplish this advantage. Economic fortunes across Africa are now diverging, making it less meaningful to treat Africa as a single entity in international economic negotiations. But despite this, in global interest, the African Union should be granted a permanent place at the G20, and a more focused, sophisticated and strategic African leadership is needed.
