Illustrating 260 pieces of beadwork dating from 1850 to 1910, this book firmly places beadwork as an art form to be displayed, not merely an artefact of ethnographic interest. The increasing availability of beads in the 19th century allowed African women to develop their creativity and this study looks at outstanding examples of their art.
