Description

An earlier study by the Royal Commission, 'Sentencing for child sexual abuse in institutional contexts', examined sentencing and alternative measures available for this type of crime in New South Wales. This new report extends on and expands that study to include cases from other Australian jurisdictions and to investigate whether various factors are related to sentencing outcomes or delay, including the victim's age and gender, delay between the offence and the sentence, victim?offender relationship, nature of the offence, and the institution's response to the offending. Based on 283 sentenced cases of institutional child sexual abuse, this analysis provides a more nuanced understanding of the nature of, and responses to, institutional child sexual abuse.
