Chapter 1 focuses on professional issues in nephrology nursing and is a new addition to the Core Curriculum. The first chapter places emphasis on nursing leadership and management. All nephrology nurses are managers and leaders, whether or not they maintain a management position. All will face ethical dilemmas; all will be involved in providing a safe clinical environment; all will take part in assessing quality care; and all are expected to perform as aprofessional with an understanding of what that entails.Chapter 2 concentrates on research and evidence-based practice and what it means to nephrology nurses. It offers information on sites where valuable statistics and further information can be obtained.Chapter 3 explains the political process and the importance for all of us to get involved. It is not as difficult as one might think. Chapter 4 motivates the reader to prepare for emergencies. As too many of us know, emergencies and disasters do happen, and having plans in place prior to the event can help lessen the residual impact.
