Instead, she finds herself assigned to a huge junkyard on an arid ball of sand called Home III. Worse, the old curmudgeon in charge tells her to do nothing and stay out of his hair. Scarlet goes exploring and ends up purchasing Blackbird, an ancient starship. An anomaly is detected while Scarlet is testing the starship's systems in space. A starship the size of a small planet has entered the Home Star System. An alien species called the Planet Eaters have arrived and will strip Home III of all life--including the old curmudgeon. Unfortunately, Blackbird is Home III's only defender. Even though Scarlet realizes attacking the Planet Eater's starship will be futile, and she will probably die, she has no option but to attack the monstrous starship. She is critically wounded early on, but is not only able to destroy the starship but capture a live Planet Eater. Scarlet survives. Unfortunately, her long rehab bars her from becoming a Star Warrior and even remaining in Star Service. Thankfully for humanity, she becomes the Rogue Warrior.
