Description

What do you get when you cross a 46 year-old, an impending marriage collapse and a thirty-two foot wallet? For ex-marine John, the answer was obvious. An adventure. It was 1980, and with no long distance sailing experience and unsure of what his future held, newly-single John bought a boat with the intention of sailing it single-handed across the Atlantic. This is a story for anyone who feels that life may be passing them by or be yearning for change. It is a hope and an inspiration for many who want to take the plunge but cannot quite commit to throwing themselves overboard. This is the true story of one man's courage and determination to not simply accept retirement or an easy career, but who made a choice to grasp life and opportunity with both hands and change his future. And even whilst fellow yachters died attempting the same journey, John was never the type to quit. Despite the ups and downs, terror and excitement that such a choice brought, he nevertheless found fulfilment and happiness in the most unlikely of places. This is the story of the people he met, the hardships he endured and the experience he gained during his two-year voyage aboard Ioana. This is the story of my Uncle John.Born in 1934 in Minehead, Somerset to a fisherman and a seamstress, John left home at fifteen and spent the next thirty years in the Royal Marines and the SBS. Following his seafaring exploits around Europe and the Americas, he finally retired to Spain in 1997. He recently lost his battle with cancer.
