L'inspecteur Harry Bosch surveille l'enlèvement des deux premiers cadavres de l'année nouvelle lorsque le sergent de garde au commissariat de Hollywood l'informe qu'un humérus d'enfant vient d'être retrouvé dans les hauteurs de Laurel Canyon. Qui plus est, l'os porte des traces laissant entendre qu'il y aurait eu mauvais traitements répétés. Horrifié par la nouvelle - il n'y a rien de plus éprouvant que d'enquêter sur la mort d'un enfant -, Harry Bosch se rend sur les lieux de la découverte et s'aperçoit que l'enfant semble avoir été tout à la fois victime d'un assassinat prémédité et, contradiction majeure, enterré à la va-vite. Et pour corser la difficulté, l'affaire remonterait à une vingtaine d'années. Désespérante au possible, la tâche qui l'attend pourrait le devenir si Harry Bosch ne faisait alors la rencontre d'une jeune recrue éperdue d'admiration pour lui...
