Bertrand, professeur de dessin, rencontre au Père-Lachaise une inconnue le jour de la crémation de son père. Elle trimballe comme lui une urne à bout de bras. Il la trouve belle. Plus tard, dans une chambre d'hôtel, leurs deux corps s'emmêlent. Resplandy, la femme que Bertrand vient d'étreindre, ouvre les urnes puis mélange les cendres avant de disparaître. Bertrand, stupéfait par ce geste, part à la poursuite de Resplandy. Il va peu à peu fouiller dans sa propre histoire, comprendre le passé d'un père qu'il n'a jamais vraiment connu, le passé d'un héros, un héros timide et souriant. Dans ce roman, Yves Bichet, l'auteur de La Part animale, de La Femme Dieu et du Porteurd'ombre, nous entraîne dans l'enquête d'un homme sidéré par les femmes autour de lui et qui incarne peut-être, à son corps défendant, une nouvelle figure masculine.
