Quelques jours après, un attaché de l'ambassade de France au Japon reçoit un curieux paquet abritant une suite de trente-six carnets : l'histoire d'Émile Monroig, ami et mentor du narrateur au pays du Soleil-Levant. Français comme lui, Monroig a choisi de lui confier, en guise de testament, le roman de sa vie. Qui était Monroig? Comment en est-il arrivé à mettre fin à ses jours, dans la grande tradition nippone? Se prénommait-il Émile, Maurice, ou Wolfgang? À mesure que les carnets s'égrènent, le narrateur, et avec lui le lecteur, sont emportés dans un drame personnel qui épouse les méandres de la grande Histoire, du Berlin nazi d'avant-guerre où Monroig vit le jour, au Paris de la Libération, jusqu'à la Corée où il couvrira en tant qu'envoyé spécial d'un quotidien français le premier grand conflit de la guerre froide. Jusqu'à ce que son destin, scellé depuis l'enfance, le rattrape enfin, au Japon, cet archipel du bout du monde, pour le meilleur et pour le pire... Richard Collasse est né en 1953. Il vit et travaille au Japon depuis plus de trente ans. Il est l'auteur de trois romans, La Trace (Seuil, 2007), Saya (Seuil, 2009) et L'Océan dans la rizière (Seuil, 2012).
