Tout film qui nous a plu un jour prend place dans notre mémoire au côté d'autres souvenirs. Il est un souvenir parmi d'autres, soumis comme eux à la menace de l'oubli. Il arrive ainsi que des images de films nous traînent dans la tête comme si elles faisaient partie de notre vie même... Il nous faut "monter" nos souvenirs, ces rushes de la mémoire, pour recomposer une continuité, pour en faire un récit. [...] Il y a deux ou trois ans, les heures d'insomnie m'étaient devenues l'occasion d'un type d'investigation un peu particulier. Je me lançais à la reconquête de mes plus vieux souvenirs, ceux d'avant 1940. Je collectais la nuit des lambeaux d'images et, le jour venu, courais chez ma mère pour la faire parler. [...] Je ne sais pas exactement quand j'ai vu Casablanca pour la première fois... M. A. Marc Augé, ethnologue et écrivain, a été président de l'École des hautes études en sciences sociales entre 1985 et 1995.
