Wellman se heurte aussi à la communauté noire qui se méfie de lui et n'apprécie guère, en pleines tensions raciales, de voir un Blanc s'immiscer dans ses affaires. Tandis que les manifestations de rue se succèdent, rythmées par les discours de Martin Luther King, Wellman mène une enquête qui l'entraînera au bout de l'enfer où ni les Noirs ni les Blancs n'ont intérêt à ce que le meurtre soit résolu... Né en 1947 dans une petite ville d'Alabama, Thomas H. Cook a étudié l'histoire à l'université Columbia de New York avant de l'enseigner quelque temps. Secrétaire de rédaction au magazine Atlanta, il s'est vite tourné vers l'écriture, publiant une trentaine de romans où le meurtre n'est qu'un des aspects de la noirceur de l'âme humaine. Un Edgar Award et le prix du Meilleur Polar des lecteurs de Points (2013) ont récompensé Au lieu-dit Noir-Étang... Il vit à aujourd'hui à Los Angeles.
